Hot pants

It seems someone’s laundry couldn’t take the heat, with emergency services responding to reports of a fire on Monday. Police said they received a report that an item of clothing hanging on a fence caught fire at 8.30pm. The garment was reportedly out upon the arrival of police.

Youth strategy

Masterton, Carterton, and South Wairarapa District Councils launched Te Rautaki Rangatahi o Wairarapa: Wairarapa Youth Strategy yesterday. It marks the first time all three of the region’s councils have come together to develop a common vision for rangatahi [youth] across Wairarapa, a spokesperson said. The strategy sets out seven priorities that rangatahi in the region have identified and what councils can do to respond to and support their needs and aspirations. The three mayors said the strategy outlines how the region’s councils should consider the provision of services, facilities, and activities for young people. “It is a lens that we can use when delivering for or working with rangatahi in the region – one that can be applied across all the work we do”.

Power outages

More than 90 properties will be without power for six hours next week for Powerco maintenance. The power company is shutting down electricity to 91 properties along Warekahau and Western Lake Rd on June 20 to enable poles and cross arms to be replaced. The outage is expected to last from 9.15am-3.15pm. Tomorrow power will be shut off to 38 properties along Cape Palliser and Whangaimoana roads for pole replacement, with the estimated seven-hour outage beginning at 9am. An alternative date for the work is June 20. Additionally, Powerco has cancelled an outage that was going to affect 30 properties along Moiki Rd in Martinborough tomorrow.
