Grower sentenced

A Masterton gardener was sentenced to community detention for growing a cannabis plant and receiving stolen property. Calvin Zabell, 30, appeared in Masterton District Court last week after police found a stolen jet ski and a cannabis plant in his house. Judge Andrew Nicholls said he was willing to treat Zabell’s offending as a stumble. “You used to be in front of this court a lot, but you’ve made a lot of improvements in the last few years including starting your gardening business,” he said. Zabell was sentenced to four months of community detention with a curfew from 7pm-7am.

Water shutdown

Properties in Martinborough and Featherston were struck with a surprise water outage yesterday. South Wairarapa District Council said the outage was an unscheduled service repair by Wellington Water. Properties on Churchill Cr and Kowhai Gr in Featherston had no water from 11.20am-1.20pm. Properties on Strasbourge St in Martinborough were without water from 11.45am-1.45pm.
