Property damage and drug taking was found at a Carterton Playcentre on Sunday night.
Carterton Playcentre posted on social media photos of beer cans and drug paraphernalia [bong], and burnt holes in equipment coverings found on the site. CCTV footage recorded male youths entering and leaving the centre.
Police received the report of wilful damage to the Belvedere Rd premises on Monday night. The case was being assessed, and enquiries were in the initial phase.
Playcentre regional manager Pauline Gibbons said these incidents were unfortunate, but they did happen at play centres around the country.
“All our playcentres to safety checks every night before opening.”
Carterton Mayor Ron Mark said the behaviour was disappointing.
“If they’re Carterton residents, you’d like to think they would care about their community. They don’t look that young.
“It’s not just about doing stuff wrong, but what they do to make it up. Whether they care about their community, if they’re remorseful, that’s how we make our decision.”
He said the evidence of drug taking was particularly disappointing.
“Drugs can be awful things and can ruin lives. This should be a serious concern for their parents.
“I’m not one to slag all young people, there are plenty of good kids, but this just looks silly and dumb.”
The playcentre was approached but did not comment.
