Holiday drivers crashing toward the new year

The lead-up to 2023 has been one of car crashes across Wairarapa.

A car flipped and began leaking fuel on Masterton-Castlepoint Rd yesterday, but the driver was left uninjured.

A police spokesperson said they responded to the incident at about 11.15, and the road was partially blocked while the car was being towed.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they attended the scene to clean up the leaking fuel and retrieve the vehicle.

By 11.45, fire crews and an ambulance had left the scene.

Police said the car was towed soon after 12pm.

Less than 24 hours earlier, police were called to a report of dangerous driving on Masterton-Castlepoint Rd soon after 5.30pm.

“We have the vehicle’s registration and will follow up,” they said.

Thursday was a day of two-vehicle crashes in Martinborough.

Two people suffered moderate and minor injuries after two cars collided, causing one to roll, at the intersection of Princess and Kitchener Streets at about 12.25pm. Just hours later, one patient was taken to hospital after a two-vehicle collision on the intersection of Jellicoe St and Dublin St at 7.30pm.

“One patient was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries three patients were treated for minor injuries,” the police spokesperson said.

“The intersection was briefly blocked.”

To add to the spate of dangerous driving, police were made aware of two vehicles drag racing on SH2 near Ahikouka shortly before 10pm.

“One did not have headlights on; police are aware.”

The Ministry of Transport said there had only been one road death in Wairarapa during December.
