“Honesty, transparency and trust.”
Those are the principles driving Craig Bowyer to run for Masterton’s mayoralty in this year’s local body elections.
Bowyer, who is the chairman of Automobile Association Wairarapa, said he would bring governance and business acumen to the council.
His professional governance experience includes being a national councillor for the New Zealand Automobile Association and being an associate member of the Institute of Directors.
He also sits on Masterton District Council’s Strategic Aerodrome Committee, the Remutaka Transport Group, and the Masterton Road Safety Council.
Bowyer has also owned businesses over the past 35 years.
He said if he were elected mayor, he would “bring the council together to ensure the outlook for the future is one that is financially sustainable for all Masterton households and business owners”.
“The current and future ratepayers of Masterton are not a bottomless pit of money,” he said.
“Cornerstone to this is my belief that we build our new town hall on the existing site and extend the library on the land we, the ratepayers, already own.”
Bowyer said Masterton District Council needed to concentrate on the council’s core business and what
the community needed.
“Jobs, housing, safer communities, keeping hospital services; these are all things we can build together.
“Navigating the Three Waters Proposal along with reassessing the council’s Long Term Plan as the town grows will be key challenges ahead.
“My mission as mayor will be to get everyone on the same page to ensure a better future, build trust, and ensure transparency in the decision-making process.”
Bowyer and his family have lived in Masterton for more than a decade.
“It is a great place to live and work.”
Bowyer attended Wairarapa College, as did his children.
Candidate nominations for local government elections open on July 15.
Voting opens on September 16 and closes on October 8.
Final results will be announced on October 14. – NZLDR
