An artwork created by locals is up for auction to raise funds for Life Flight.
Earlier this year, Wairarapa artist Zelda Bruce gathered community members together to create an art piece inspired by Jackson Pollock.
A Life Flight spokesperson said MP Kieran McAnulty was one of the many who took turns in leaving their mark on the canvas.
“This one-of-a-kind artwork is now up for auction with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to Life Flight.”
The spokesperson said Bruce was airlifted in 2008 after a petrol explosion at her home burned her severely.
Bruce said that if it wasn’t for the helicopter that took her to the medical attention she needed, she didn’t know if she would have survived.
“Today, she generously supports and raises awareness of her rescuers, Life Flight,” the spokesperson said.
Jackson Pollock’s action paintings revolutionised the art world in the 1950s.
His method of dripping paint on to a canvas was the inspiration for this community art piece as the many colours reflect the diversity of the community and New Zealand as a whole, Bruce said.
The 65th anniversary of the death of Pollock is this year, and Bruce felt it was an appropriate time to put this particular artwork up for auction.
The Life Flight service provides free, urgent aeromedical care at all hours through the Westpac rescue helicopter and air ambulance planes.
Life Flight respond to a medical emergency on average every 6 hours, help about 1,500 people each year, and have saved over 36,000 patients to date.
The art piece can be viewed at the Yebo Art Studio in Featherston.
