Police have arrested one of four men thought to be involved in the armed robbery of a Carterton home on Saturday.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, four men – one wielding a long-barrelled firearm, another a hammer – confronted a Frederick St resident, leaving them badly shaken.
A 30-year-old man thought to be involved was arrested after police ran a search warrant at a residential address on Monday and recovered items stolen in the robbery at the property.
A firearm thought to be used during the robbery was also found.
He appeared in the Hutt Valley District Court on Tuesday, charged with aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm.
“It’s diligent police work in both Wairarapa and the Hutt Valley that led to the arrest,” Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Bysouth said.
He said inquiries were still ongoing to find the remaining three offenders, but police did not think there was any risk from the group to the wider community as it was a targeted attack.
Carterton Mayor Greg Lang echoed Bysouth’s comments that the robbery was unrelated to other incidents in the district.
“I’ve had the odd call from concerned residents and have done my best to reassure them.”
Carterton was a close-knit community and incidents like this were a great reminder to check in with your neighbours, he said.
Lang said the police had been great at communicating with him and he was thankful for their work.
“It’s a pretty quick response from both police units and a great result.”
Anyone with information that can help to find the other three offenders is urged to call police on 105 quoting file number 200613/1175.

When we moved to Carterton in 2016 we were told that no-one had security alarms and they weren’t needed. Even attending a seminar where a police officer said that cameras were a waste of time and not to bother.
A number of recent incidents were solved by CCTV footage. A working alarm is a deterrent and a wise investment
