About a dozen schools around Wairarapa have got newly constructed scooter stands thanks to a joint effort by Wairarapa Road Safety Council [WRSC], Mitre 10 Mega and The Men’s Shed.
The popularity of scooters has been increasing, so at the start of the year WRSC sent out a message to Wairarapa schools to see the need for some type of stand.
Thanks to Mitre 10 Mega Masterton donating the materials and The Men’s Shed donating manpower, almost a dozen schools have been given scooter stands.
“It’s fantastic,” St Patrick’s school principal Steve Wheeler said.
“Scooters are taking over bikes.”
He said they had between 20-50 scooters parked up each day – and before it was just a pile of scooters.
The stands will help with clearing and organising the area as well as making it safer.
The stands are portable and an easy layout, so the students and schools were able to get involves with the project, WRSC’s Holly Hullena said.
She said parents were liking scooters because they were so portable.
Congestion is reduced closer to schools because parents are parking a little bit away and letting the kids scoot the final part of the journey themselves.
Mitre 10 staff and Men’s shed members said they were happy to get behind the community project.
