Masterton Pak ‘n Save staff were quick to act yesterday when a fire broke out at the on-site fuel station.
A small blaze started in an air compressor which was inside the station’s control shed. Masterton Fire Service station officer Kevin Smith said supermarket staff “did all the right things”.
“They isolated the fuel supply shut-off switch and extinguished the fire with a dry powder extinguisher.”
Two fire trucks were called to the scene at 1.55pm, and two crew members with breathing apparatuses went inside the shed to isolate the internal power supply switch.
Mr Smith said the fire was out when the crew arrived.
Pak ‘n Save Masterton owner Paul de Lara-Bell said no one had been in danger and he was proud of his staff.
“Being a fuel site you have to go through the right procedures and do all the correct things because things can go wrong.
We just did everything by the book.”
He said it was the first fire at the station and most of the damage was simply just the mess caused by CO2 power from the two extinguishers used to put out the blaze.
“We had all the firefighting gear there, it’s all set up properly and we have all gone on courses.
We know exactly what to do, so it was a training exercise that turned real.”
