There was a famous (or perhaps infamous) visitor at Greytown School yesterday, with United States presidential candidate Donald Trump taking time out of his busy schedule to join in the fun.
Trump took his place along Spongebob Squarepants in the scarecrow competition at the school’s annual pet day, managing to scare off a lot more than just birds.
The scarecrow competition was just one of many, with the traditional calves and lambs appearing alongside everything from cats and dogs to pot plants and pet rocks.
Hundreds of parents and kids were on hand to enjoy a sausage sizzle while watch the judging, with the day finishing with a musical parade of the all the creatures on show.
Principal Kevin Mackay said he attended his first pet day at the school in 1980.
And despite retiring at the end of this term, he would be back again next year to make sure the rural tradition continued.
Mr Mackay joked that while the animals on show had evolved over the years, the day’s nickname had stuck.
Pupils still called it ‘lamb and half day’ rather than ‘lamb and calf day’, due to the fact everyone got to go home at 12.30pm.
