A young man travelling through Solway was surprised to see his dad’s smashed up truck on the side of the road.
Seconds later he saw his father and pulled over straight away.
Emergency services were called to the incident in the 70km/h zone along High St in Solway, near the Gateway Motor Inn, at 3pm on Monday.
The man said his father, a forestry contractor, told him that he simply veered into the pole after making a turn.
“He turned left out of Solway Crescent and basically lost control, and veered left then hit the pole,” he said.
Masterton station officer Kevin Smith understood there were two men in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The people in the property near the smashed pole were asked to stay put as fire crews were treating as live the power lines that had fallen in the residents’ backyard as well as on a vehicle.
Powerco arrived shortly after the incident to turn off the power.
Traffic heading south out of Masterton slowly crept past the scene, having been backed up for at least one kilometre.
Mr Smith said police and fire crews were unsure how the ute made its way 20m further down the street from the pole it had collided with.
Sergeant Shaun Broughton said he was surprised that no one in the vehicle was injured despite the state of the power pole.
