Tararua District Council are urging people to be more careful about how they dispose of batteries after narrowly avoiding a disaster after an old battery was incorrectly disposed of at the transfer station. The transfer stations in Masterton, Riversdale, Castlepoint, and Wairarapa Resource Centre all offer battery recycling facilities in the Masterton district. The Carterton District transfer station at Dalefield Rd also accepts batteries for recycling. All community transfer stations in the South Wairarapa district accept battery recycling, and an additional battery collection point will be established at Ngāwī. Batteries should be recycled correctly as they pose a risk when thrown into general waste.
SH2 roadworks
There is an altered lane layout between 7.30am and 5pm on SH2 near Andersons Line in Carterton until Friday and an altered lane layout on SH2 near Norfolk Rd and Cornwall Rd in Waingawa until Thursday, between 7pm to 6am for line marking. Stop-go signals are also in place on SH2 near Somerset Rd in Clareville until Thursday, between 7pm to 6am. There is a nightly road closure on SH2 from Cornwall Rd to Hughes Line until Thursday; the road will be closed between 7pm and 6am for chip sealing.
Slip, slop, slap
After a rainy weekend, the sun is back for the coming days. Temperatures on Friday and Saturday are expected to hit a high of 28 degrees Celsius, while today, tomorrow, and Thursday have a predicted high of 26degC. The UV ratings are expected to be high, so sun protection is essential. Niwa advises that sun protection is needed, even on cloudy days, and the UV level will be high each day until about 5.30pm.
Trail vegetation
to be cleared
Workers on the Wairarapa side of the Remutaka Rail Trail will be spraying gorses and weeds on the sides of tracks between Cross Creek and the Siberia Tunnel from today until February 19. Walkers and cyclists are advised to take note of signage and be aware of workers, vehicles and wet vegetation in the area. The spray takes 48 hours to dry.
