Test of speed and marksmanship

It was all about ‘load, lock and shoot’ for the 95 competitors at the North Island Practical Shooting championship at Gladstone on the weekend.

The Wairarapa Pistol and Shooting Sports Club hosted what organiser Phil Dunlop thought was the biggest event of its kind held in the region.

The aim of practical shooting was speed and accuracy but with pressure added in, Mr Dunlop said.

“The match always has different starting positions — things to disorientate them,” he said.

“It’s a bit of a mental game.”

Mr Dunlop sets up the courses which are purpose built to test each competitor’s ability to “resolving a challenge”.

The event attracted competitors from Invercargill to Warkworth, north of Auckland.
