Brigade opens up for volunteers

The Masterton Composite Fire Brigade is hosting its Open Day on Saturday, welcoming volunteers from all walks of life interested in giving back to the community.

The Open Day will run from 10am – 2pm and offers a chance for the public to hear about what it takes to be a volunteer, what training and new skills will be taught and the rewarding aspects of the job.

Not only does the Masterton brigade need more firefighters, but it is also looking for volunteers who can help with administration and various important jobs.

Qualified Firefighter at Masterton Brigade Alicia Lenz told the Times-Age there will be a kitchen fire demonstrator on the day – that shows people the best way to extinguish it. Crews on duty will be demonstrating a car extrication.

“You wouldn’t be expected to be on station all the time; once a week, we do training on Monday night. But as for the calls, some people respond from work – if their employers are okay with that or other people respond from home.

If you are unable to make the Open Day, you can still register your interest through www.fireandemergency.nz/volunteer – where you will be put in contact with a Masterton brigade leader.
