Annual food bank appeal
Carterton Foodbank is having its annual food drive on Wednesday, November 1. Fire and Emergency NZ and other community groups will be collecting by visiting streets between 5.30pm and 8.30pm. This is a significant event for the food bank, which hopes to collect three to four months of food for the service. The types of food preferred are cans, cereals, pasta, rice, and similar non-perishable food items.

The participating stores are Featherston’s Chicken and Frog, Featherston Ferret, For The Love of Books, Messines Bookshop, Mr Feather’s Den, and The Dickensian Bookshop, Greytown’s Mrs Blackwell’s Village Bookshop, The Martinborough Bookshop, Carterton’s Almo’s Books, and Take Note, and Masterton’s Bear Flag Books & Retro, Hedleys Books, and PaperPlus. More information can be found at www.bookshopday.nz.
Holiday traffic
There will be multiple planned roadworks on SH2 over the coming days, especially on Remutaka Hill as slip repairs are completed. The school holidays also end this weekend, meaning there may be more traffic on the roads as families return from holiday breaks. Drivers are urged to factor this into their travel plans and allow for extra travel time, as well as look out for changes in traffic, road, and weather. The Remutaka closure on the Featherston side will be stop/start day and night from today to Friday.
Booklovers app
Featherston Booktown has developed the Booklover’s Trail App Te Ara Kai Pukapuka – the first app of its kind in NZ. The free download showcases 13 bookshops in the region, and their stories.
