Hospice week
As part of Hospice Awareness Week, Hospice Wairarapa volunteers will be at local supermarkets today and tomorrow collecting donations. “Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference in providing essential care and support in our community,” a spokesperson said. Anyone who is unable to visit Hospice Wairarapa in person but would like to donate can do so at hospicewairarapa.co.nz/donate
Fund deadline
Applications for grants from the Martinborough Community Board, which funds community organisations, marae committees, and individuals or groups of individuals who have come together for a common purpose to benefit the Martinborough ward, close on May 20.
In the pink
Today is Pink Shirt Day, an antibullying campaign championed by the Mental Health Foundation that celebrates diversity and encourages environments for people to feel safe, valued, and respected. Every year, workplaces, schools, organisations, and individuals are encouraged to participate in the campaign to take a stand against bullying.
Boat reminder
Greater Wellington Regional Council is reminding boat owners that there is a legal requirement for vessels four metres and under to have the owners’ contact details clearly marked. This helps identify kayaks and small boats found drifting or washed up, which is often the first sign that someone is missing at sea.
Police callouts
Wairarapa police responded to two events yesterday that didn’t yield results: No one was located after reports of someone consuming a substance on Masterton’s Queen St at 10.53am, while nothing of note was found following a burglary report in Carterton.
Hunting alert
Horizons Regional Council [HRC] is asking hunters to be on high alert and make sure the freshwater gold clam stays out of the region’s waterways, as well as hornwort, didymo, and koi carp. HRC is asking people to plan trips so they are not crossing between lakes and rivers within a couple of days and ensuring they go from upstream to downstream areas to help minimise the spread.
