Wairarapa had one of their best performances in finishing third in the Lower North Island men’s Masters played at Masterton on Monday and Tuesday.
Star performers for the home side were the pair of Gary Caffell and Colin Hutchby, who notched wins over Whanganui and Hutt Valley and drew with Kapiti and Wellington.
Peter Walker continued his good form after winning the Wairarapa open singles last month with two victories against Whanganui and Wellington.
The triple of Stuart Campbell [skip], Les O’Donovan, and Steve Elliott-Norm Beams also recorded two wins – over Manawatu and Wellington – as did the four of Gary Muriwai [skip], Peter Ireland, Dave Richards, and Geoff Balmain, who beat Manawatu and Whanganui.
Wairarapa finished on 20 points, 10 adrift of winners Hutt Valley, and seven behind runners-up Wellington.
Meanwhile, Dianne Haswell was the outstanding performer for the Wairarapa team who finished sixth in the Lower North Island women’s Masters at Silverstream.
The Masterton Park bowler won four of her five matches, including a 21-18 win over Hutt Valley, a 21-8 defeat of Wellington, a 21-12 triumph over Kapiti, and a 21-3 trouncing of Whanganui.
Her only loss was a narrow 20-21 defeat to Manawatu.
The pair of Dale Rowe [skip] and Shirley Poutu had two wins and three losses, the triple of Brenda Whitehead [skip], Jenny Mahupuku, and Teresa Hogg had one win and four losses, and the four of Anne Hollis [skip], Maureen McGhie, Dorothy Christensen, and Tina Hogg suffered five losses.
