HOCKEY
Wairarapa College and St Matthew’s Collegiate remain on course to meet in the final of the Intercity secondary schoolgirls’ championship after contrasting wins in the quarterfinals.
Waicol thrashed Nga Tawa 12-0, while St Matt’s needed a late goal to get past Whanganui High School 2-1.
In tonight’s semifinals, Waicol will play Whanganui Collegiate, who they beat 3-2 in pool play.
St Matthew’s will take on Palmerston North Girls High School, who they lost 0-2 to in pool play.
Rathkeale face a challenging task to make the final of the Intercity secondary schoolboys’ championship against the unbeaten Palmerston North Boys High School, who were 4-1 winners in their previous encounter.
Rathkeale made it to the semifinals with a 4-1 win over Cornerstone.
Waicol lost their quarterfinal against Whanganui Collegiate 1-4 and will play Whanganui High School in the fifth-eighth playoffs.
FOOTBALL
Wairarapa College have notched their best finish in the Wellington secondary schools premier championship.
Caleb Anstis [2], Shea Fowler, Brodie Dick, and Oscar Southey scored goals in the 5-2 win over St Patrick’s Town at Waicol, giving them fifth place in the eight-team league.
Rathkeale defeated Rongotai 6-5 in Wellington and finished seventh.
Jonty Roubos and Oskar James scored two goals each, and Luca Molnar and Isaac Noble also found the back of the net.
RUGBY
Three tries to prop Caedman Hawkins wasn’t enough for Wairarapa College to beat Wellington College in the Wellington secondary schools’ premier clash in Wellington last Saturday.
Wellington College prevailed 39-36 in the entertaining, tight encounter.
Tui Toilolo and Joseph Hall also scored tries for Waicol. Kortez Paku kicked four conversions and one penalty.
Waicol wrap up their championship campaign on Saturday with a home fixture against bottom-of-the-table Mana College.
NETBALL
St Matthew’s will play for promotion to division two of the regional super league on Monday night.
St Matthew’s finished unbeaten in the round-robin and will play Mana College in the division three final at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie.
A close final is likely, with the two teams having drawn 33-33 in pool play.
Wairarapa College will play off for third and fourth in division two with Hutt Valley High School.
The two sides met last week, with Waicol taking the honours with a 29-20 victory.
