For some teams, the premier winter sport season has come to an end. For others, important matches are still to come.
RUGBY
The Wairarapa College First XV finished their premier campaign on a high with a 26-22 win over St Bernard’s College last Friday.
The win means that Waicol finish fifth in the competition after just missing out on a place in the top four semifinals.
It was the second time Waicol have beaten St Bernard’s this season after they triumphed 25-0 in the round robin.
In the semifinals, St Pat’s Silverstream showed why they are the competition front-runners with a comfortable 34-12 win over Wellington College, while St Pat’s Town scored in the final seconds of the match to beat Scots College 33-26.
HOCKEY
The Waicol First XI girls’ hockey team will face off with St Matthew’s Collegiate in a must-win clash for both teams this Friday night at Clareville [6pm].
The winners will advance to next week’s premier 1 grand final, while the loser will head into the playoff for third place.
Waicol lost 2-4 to Wellington Girls’ College last Friday but get a second life courtesy of finishing the regular season in the top two.
St Matthew’s had to beat Wellington East Girls’ College on Friday night to keep their title hopes alive, and they did just that with a 2-0 win at Clareville.
In premier 1 boys’ hockey, the Rathkeale College First XI were able to celebrate on Friday night after beating the Waicol First XI for the first time in several years.
The 3-1 win means Rathkeale will play for fifth spot in next week’s final round of matches, while Waicol will play Tawa College this week to see if they can book a rematch with Rathkeale.
Rongotai College advanced to the grand final after beating Paraparaumu College 4-2, and they will meet the winners of this week’s match between Paraparaumu and Hutt International Boys’ School.
FOOTBALL
The Waicol First XI football team came up just short once again as they went down 1-2 to Tawa College.
They will play their final match of the competition this weekend in Wellington against St Pat’s Town, and only a win will give them a chance of lifting themselves off the bottom of the table.
