Tumu ITM Wairarapa United have finished fourth in the W-League. United wrapped up an inconsistent campaign with a 2-1 victory over Petone at Trust House Memorial Park on Saturday, leaving coach Paul Ifill rueing what could have been.

“We’re now starting to put the ball into the back of the net and we’re really starting to play some nice football. It’s good that the girls have taken on board the stuff that we’ve been working on,” Ifill said.

Wellington United Diamonds won their third consecutive title on goal difference from Palmerston North Marist, with Waterside-Karori third.

United lost five games in the league, twice to Diamonds and Marist and once to Petone, but it was three 1-1 draws in a row, to Seatoun, North Wellington, and Waterside-Karori that Ifill said cost the team.

“If you add six points to our total then we’re comfortably third and we would still have had a chance of getting in the top two.”

Midfielder Kennedy Bryant scored both United’s goals, one in each half, in Saturday’s win over Petone.

The win was a good confidence booster for United, who won’t have to wait long to play Petone again.

The two clashed last night at Maidstone Park, Upper Hutt in a semifinal of the Kelly Cup, a trophy that Ifill is keen to add to United’s trophy cabinet.
