Josh van Woerkom prevailed in a close finish to take line honours in the Athletics and Cycling Masterton handicap road race on Tuesday night.

Forty riders faced up to the starter for the 40km race on the hilly Y-loop course based around Wainuioru. The riders left in four handicap groups.

Starting in the ‘Break’ group, the second last group to head off, van Woerkom crossed the finish line less than one second ahead of junior rider Finn Roberts.

Duncan Cameron claimed third place, a further 0.26 seconds behind.

Kirsten Goodin was the first woman to finish, well ahead of Julie Millar.

Fastest ride of the night again went to Mark Langlands, whose time of 58 minutes 20.40 seconds was 22 seconds quicker than Simon Pumfrey.

On the short course, Ryan McNaughton outsprinted Annabelle Smith in a very tight finish.

Next Tuesday the Club Championship Road Race will be raced over two laps of the Millar’s Road circuit, starting at Gladstone Church.
