It was a win and a loss for the two Wairarapa teams competing in their 50-overs Coastal Cup challenge matches at the weekend.
United beat Levin’s Weraroa club by 84 runs on Saturday. United were bowled out in the 47th over, but not before they racked up 315 runs.
Jaco Vorster produced a star performance for United, hitting 151 [111 balls], including 20 fours, and five sixes, before he was dismissed.
Teammate and all-rounder Lucien Burt backed up the strong performance he’d given against Red Star last week with a handy 61, including nine fours, from 91 runs.
Weraroa’s innings, in which they scored 231, lasted 42 overs. Burt took 4-43 and was ably supported by Robbie Spears, 3-37 and spinner Quinn Childs, 2-24.
Meanwhile, Red Star travelled to Paraparaumu on Saturday for their final match of the competition and lost by eight wickets to Kapiti Old Boys.
Red Star were bundled out for 150 with nine overs left, with Jeremy Osborne, 61, and Peter Sigvertsen, 46, contributing the lion’s share of the runs.
Old Boys needed just 14 overs to overhaul their target for the loss of two wickets.
Red Star finished 10th in the competition.
Waicol win
In a secondary schools match played in Paraparaumu on Saturday, Wairarapa College beat Paraparaumu College by 17 runs.
On a pitch that offered plenty to the bowlers, Paraparaumu’s attack had both Waicol openers – William Sargent and Josh Nelson back in the sheds with just 23 runs on the board.
A mini recovery was on the cards when Jake Young and Oliver Bunny put on 52 in quick time before Young departed for 25 off 27 deliveries.
Mark Steventon then joined Bunny and the pair had to show resilience and patience as they rebuilt the innings.
But Bunny was caught for 36, and Steventon, who hit six boundaries, was unable to build any substantial partnerships to be left stranded on 44 not out with the score on 164.
Waicol opening bowler Josh Nelson struck early with two outswingers that were both caught by Perry Lewis, leaving Paraparaumu on the ropes at 16-2.
A couple of useful partnerships put Paraparaumu in the box seat at 109-4 before Bhulvhai Taua was introduced into the attack.
He took a three-wicket bag, to finish with 3-14 from nine overs and Jake Young finished off the tail, claiming his final wicket with a one-handed catch at 147.
Young had the best bowling figures of 4-27 and Nelson finished the game with 2-30.
