Carterton and McDonalds Lansdowne lead the way after the second round of the Umpires Cup 40-over championship.
Opener Sam Loader set up Carterton’s 48-run victory over the Rathkeale Second XI with 73 in their total of 174. Loader and number five Jarrod Woods [38] combined for the major partnership of the innings, putting 93 runs off 14 overs for the fourth wicket.
Medium-pacer Jordan Robinson had Carterton in early trouble taking the first two wickets with only five runs on the board before Loader and Woods righted the innings. He finished with 4-21, and Tyler Robinson chipped in with 3-17.
The Rathkeale innings never really got out of first gear, and if it wasn’t for some wayward bowling from the Carterton attack [51 extras, including 42 wides], the students might have struggled to reach three figures.
Jordan Robinson completed a good double, top scoring with 21. Medium-pacer Jack Wakeling was the pick of the Carterton bowlers, grabbing 4-22 off his eight overs.
Robbie Speers starred for Lansdowne in their 46-run victory over Wairarapa Mitsubishi Greytown.
The veteran all-rounder top-scored with 32 in Lansdowne’s total of 158 and then claimed four wickets as Greytown were restricted to 112.
Greytown were dismissed for 112 with number three Ricky Dey the top score on 26.
Speers took 4-24 with his leg-spin, and seam bowler Nathan Kapene claimed 3-30.
In the second-tier Chairman’s Cup, Kuranui, Red Star, and Marist had easy wins.
