A century to Mark Steventon was the highlight of Wairarapa College’s win over the Scots College 2nd XI in the first round of the Wellington secondary schools Premier Two First XI competition on Saturday.

Steventon strode out to bat with his side 19-1 in the sixth over and dominated the bowling from the outset.

He combined with Jacob Watkins-Reid [12] for a 66-run partnership, and then forged a 122-run partnership off just 16 overs with Felix Stephens [55 off 72 balls].

When Steventon was third wicket to fall, caught by Yash Panchal off the bowling of Charlie Holmes, with the score on 207, he had contributed 120 runs, including 18 fours, off 90 balls.

Zac Vainu [24] and Samuel Payne [34 not out], in his First XI debut as a Year Nine student, had brief cameos as Waicol amassed an impressive 307-7 off their 50 overs.

Vainu and Watkins-Reid knocked the top off the Scots batting to have the visitors struggling at 15-3.

A middle order recovery by Kaiarahi Brunning [52] and Holmes [73] threatened for a while, but when Payne bowled Holmes and Archie Treadwell in the space of four balls, to make the score 203-7, the result was never really in doubt.

A last-wicket partnership of 33 between Cody Elliot [22] and Samuel Archibald [12no] took Scots to a respectable 274.

Waicol will be away to the Wellington College 3rd XI in their next match on Saturday.
