The Wairarapa Spitfires Under-13 travel team played their first match in the Wellington baseball competition on Sunday.

For the first time, Wairarapa has entered its own baseball team in the wider Wellington competition.

They were up against Porirua’s Central Sports Club, and it was a tight match that was tied at 7 until the final inning.

The final score was 10-7 to Central, but Spitfires manager Shane Fawdray said while it was a loss on paper for the players, it was still a win for a young and newly formed Spitfires team.

“The kids had a brilliant time of it, and coach Tommy Hartmann and I look forward to the team going from strength to strength as the Sunday morning competition ramps up for the season.”

Trinity Savaliga had a magnificent double for the team, while Ian McRae pitched a perfect inning to keep the game close.

Next week, the Spitfires play the Levin Hustle at Te Whiti Park in Lower Hutt.
