Interest in children wanting to play rugby league has been so high, Pioneer Sports Club will field three teams this season.

Last year Pioneer fielded an Under-14 team in the Manawatu competition, but the response has been so positive this season the club has entered three teams in the Under-12, Under-14, and Under-16 grades.

Organiser Paul Griffiths said there was a good mixture of children from most of the schools, but there was still room to join a team.

Griffiths said the season was about eight weeks and did not clash with the rugby season.

Most games will be played in Palmerston North.

Pioneer will, however, host teams from the Linton Cobras at their Jeans St ground for Saturday’s season kick-off starting at 11am.

Players in all three teams will also sport flash new jerseys provided through the club’s sponsors – Carroll’s Joinery, Mana Plasterers, and Manuka Hunters.

Griffiths said that children interested in playing could come for training sessions at Jeans St. The U-12s train at 5pm on Wednesdays, and the U-14s and U-16s train at 5pm on Friday.
