Jackson Street Bar Lansdowne will defend their Bidwill Cup title against Burger King Red Star in this weekend’s final.
Both teams made light work of their last round-robin matches to qualify for the decider. Lansdowne trounced Auto Imports Marist by nine wickets, while Red Star crushed Wairarapa Mitsubishi Greytown by 172 runs.
Medium pacer Reece Hannam was the star for Lansdowne taking six wickets for 28 runs as Marist were dismissed for 113 on the Queen Elizabeth Park Oval.
Hannam knocked the top off the Marist batting line-up, claiming the first four wickets to fall including skittling the stumps of the dangerous Wairarapa opener Jared van Deventer for four runs.
Rathkeale student and Wairarapa rep Gus Borren ensured there would be no jitters in the Lansdowne chase, smashing 62 off 45 balls [11 fours, one six] in adding 99 for the first wicket in less than 14 overs with Aaron Bidlake [34no].
Red Star opener Robbie Anderson continued his late season run of form with a patient 70 to set up his team’s total of 236-8 declared.
When Anderson was dismissed with the score at 106-3, the match was finely balanced, but good contributions from Brock Price [34], Nathan Elliott [37] and Rathkeale student Alfie McIntosh [33no] saw Red Star through to a respectable total on a tricky Greytown pitch.
Greytown had no answer to the accuracy of the Red Star seam bowling attack.
After Peter Sigvertsen [3-28] and Jared Watt [2-20] had knocked off the top of the home side’s batting, Stefan Hook, fresh from making his first class debut for the Central Stags against Wellington, cleaned up the tail with 4-11 from 6.2 overs.
Number six batsman Roshan Sugathan saved Greytown from total embarrassment, scoring 39 of the team’s 64 runs.
The two-day final will be played on the Oval next Saturday and Sunday.
