Billboard takes a lead

Animal rights charity SAFE is behind the latest addition to the flashing billboard displayed opposite racing minister Kieran McAnulty’s Masterton office on Queen St – a plea to ban greyhound racing. The sign features a greyhound tilting its head with the text ‘Woof! Ban racing, that’s the best bet!’ SAFE campaigns manager Anna de Roo said the billboard is a reminder of the hundreds of greyhounds still trapped in the industry. “There has been a lack of action on greyhound racing,” said de Roo. “In the last decade, four separate reports have all come to similar conclusions, which is that dogs are suffering in this industry. “McAnulty told media in May that changes in the industry were essential after the latest report claimed it was no longer viable. “Continue under strict conditions or closure,’’ he said.
