It was a Brock Price benefit as Burger King Red Star convincingly beat Weraroa in Levin in a Coastal Challenge clash on Saturday.
Price plundered a century and then took five wickets in Red Star’s 89-run victory.
Price came to the wicket with Red Star 49-2 and proceeded to plunder the bowling to all parts of the Weraroa Domain.
His 119 came off 78 balls, a strike rate of 152, and included 12 fours and seven sixes.
Red Star were in trouble at 73-4, but a 101-run partnership between Price and Cole Freeman, who provided good support with 27 runs, had them through to a respectable 223 on the low slow pitch.
Weraroa were always battling against the consistent Red Star bowling. Captain Peter Sigvertsen and Jared Watt, playing his first game of the season, picked up two wickets apiece to have the home side struggling at 50-4.
Thomas Morgan and Locky Spring threatened with a mini recovery of 41 runs, but the dismissal of Morgan caught by Watt off the bowling of Price ended the home team’s hopes.
The win lifts Red Star to a share of fourth place in the combined Wairarapa, Whanganui and Horowhenua-Kapiti competition.
A hard-hit century to Wairarapa representative captain Jaco Vorster wasn’t enough to get Jackson Street Bar Lansdowne up for victory against Kapiti Old Boys at Paraparaumu.
Chasing 235 for victory, Lansdowne’s top order failed to fire and they were 32-3 when Vorster strode to the wicket.
The South African didn’t waste any time taking to the home team bowling, dispatching it to all corners of the Paraparaumu Domain, bringing up his century in 72 balls. He hit nine fours and four sixes in his 115.
Unfortunately for Vorster, he lacked for support from the other batsmen, and when he was ninth wicket to fall, that ended Lansdowne’s chances of gaining their first win of the competition.
Vorster was earlier the best of the Lansdowne bowlers, picking up 4-50.
Red Star will host Whanganui Collegiate at Greytown, and Lansdowne will play Whanganui Tech Old Boys at Queen Elizabeth Park Oval on Saturday.
