Wairarapa College must beat Paraparaumu College on Saturday to qualify for the Wellington First XV premier championship.
Waicol were no match for the big St Bernard’s forward pack, conceding four tries in a 0-24 loss last Saturday, leaving them with a do-or-die clash at home.
Waicol should enter the game with confidence, with Paraparaumu having had a narrow 25-22 win over Wainuiomata College before being thumped 0-62 by Onslow College.
Rathkeale continued their build-up for the Central North Island championship with a 38-5 defeat of Hato Paora last Saturday.
Jayden Webb-Milner, Joe Quinn, Cody McGlashan [2], and Wiremu Bartlett [2] scored tries for Rathkeale.
HOCKEY
Two of Wairarapa’s most prestigious secondary school trophies will go on the line at Clareville on Friday night in the first round of the Intercity secondary schools championships.
The Wairarapa College and St Matthew’s girls’ first XIs will play for the Dunce Cup, presented in memory of the late Colin Dunce, who collapsed and died while umpiring a match between the two sides.
Waicol warmed up for the clash with a 10-0 win over Whanganui High School. Meanwhile, St Matt’s were beaten 0-3 by Palmerston North Girls’ High school.
Holders Rathkeale will be out to defend the Annear Family Cup they won for the first time.
The trophy was presented by former Hockey Wairarapa president and longstanding Waicol boys’ first XI manager Lindsay Annear after his youngest child left college.
Waicol warmed-up with a 4-0 victory over Cornerstone, and Rathkeale defeated Feilding High School 3-1.
The girls’ clash will start at 5.15pm and the boys will hit off at 6.45pm on Friday.
FOOTBALL
Rathkeale and Wairarapa College probably need wins in their final grading matches to qualify for the Wellington premier championship after losses in the second-round games last Saturday.
Rathkeale were well beaten 5-1 by Wellington College but will be heavily favoured to beat Tawa College at home on Saturday.
Tawa struggled to a 2-1 win over St Bernard’s College, who Rathkeale had beaten 17-0 in the first round.
Waicol lost 1-0 to St Patrick’s Town and are at home to Hutt Valley High School, who have lost both games including a 0-6 loss to Paraparaumu College, who Waicol beat 5-2 in the first round.
