Rathkeale draw and Wairarapa College had a loss and a win in inter-school matches played over recent days.
RATHKEALE
A dogged rearguard action denied the Rathkeale 1st XI an outright victory in their two-day intercollegiate fixture against New Plymouth’s Francis Douglas Memorial College at Rathkeale on Sunday and Monday.
After being put into bat, a solid batting performance had Rathkeale post a useful 229.
Rathkeale captain Gus Borren continued his good form, top-scoring with 66. Hunter Wyeth also impressed on his return from injury with 35.
Despite the seamer-friendly conditions, the leg-spin of Aaron Manning-Fleming was the most effective, claiming five wickets for 48 runs.
The Francis Douglas reply started briskly, romping to 65 before the medium pace of Wyeth and spin of Jesse McIntyre stemmed the flow of runs and wickets tumbled, leaving the visitors on 140-5 at stumps.
Francis Douglas resumed in positive fashion, but disciplined Rathkeale bowling saw them declare at 201-9, conceding a 28-run lead.
Rathkeale immediately set about building their advantage with controlled aggression but were all out for 139, with the Francis Douglas off-spinner Keegan Boon taking 4-24 including a hat-trick.
Needing a challenging 168 to win in 30 overs the visitors set about the chase with gusto. However, disciplined bowling and intensity in the field soon had Francis Douglas reeling at 50-6.
The visitors then shut up shop and batted out for the draw.
WAIRARAPA COLLEGE
Wairarapa College slumped to a 53-run loss away to Newlands College in the latest round of the Wellington secondary schools’ Premier Two championship on Saturday.
An unbeaten 78 by Cory Whitelaw set up Newlands’ total of 235 off their 50 overs.
Samuel Payne was the best of the Waicol bowlers claiming 3-30 off 10 tight overs.
Waicol never recovered from a poor start which had them lose their first three wickets for 25 runs.
Only an aggressive 64 [61 balls, including five fours and three sixes] to number five batsman Felix Stephens added respectability to Waicol’s score, as they were dismissed for 182.
Waicol did bounce back with an impressive 78-run win over Whanganui High School in a 50-overs match on Monday.
Payne [69] and Hadley Wiramanaden [65] combined for a 97-run seventh wicket partnership as Waicol set an imposing total of 295.
Opener Zach farmer was the star for Whanganui High School, retiring on 128 runs. When he was the fifth wicket to fall with the score at 183, that started a collapse with the remaining five wickets falling for
34 runs.
