Martinborough top of the table

South African Niel Henriks remains unbeaten in singles, and Martinborough top the table after the third round of the Shirley Corlett Trophy interclub tennis played on the Martinborough grass courts on Saturday.

Division One was played as a four-draw round robin, and Hendriks dominated, winning all three matches, but unlike previous fixtures, the Dry River coach was tested in his final match.

After comfortably beating Martinborough’s Chris Wilkie 4–1 4–2 and clubmate Jacob Emery 4–1 4–0, Henriks was tested by Carterton teenager William Day, dropping the first set 3–5 before bouncing back to win the second 4–0, and prevailing 10–6 in the super tiebreaker.

The other division one results were evenly spread, with all three finishing with one win and two loss records. Emery beat Day 4–1 5–3, Day defeated Wilkie 4–2 4–2, and Wilkie got the better of Emery, winning 4–1 5–4.

Division Two was played as a knockout eight-draw, with Shane Colton taking the spoils in an all-Martinborough final against Ed Wilkie.

Colton beat Lily Williams [Dry River] 4–1 4–2 in the first round, and then Mike Jackson [Ōpaki] 4–1 2–4 10–4 in the semifinal.

Ed Wilkie made the final with a 4–0 4–0 win over Josh Crabb [Dry River] and a 5-4 4–1 defeat of Ōpaki’s Duncan Oakley.

In a close final, Colton prevailed 5–3 4–2 over his clubmate.

The fourth round will be hosted by Ōpaki on Saturday.

Points:

Martinborough 61, Dry River 57, Carterton 50, Ōpaki 31.
