Martinborough have an almost unassailable lead in the Wairarapa men’s interclub sevens with three rounds to play.

The southern club are on 115 points and have a 40-point lead over nearest rivals Masterton, with Greytown two points back in third place.

With a maximum 24 points up for grabs, Martinborough can be caught, but it will take a spectacular loss of form and an almost perfect run of results from the chasing pack.

Singles exponent Scott Mackenzie has led the way for Martinborough, winning all six games and picking up bonus points in three games for winning by 11 shots or more. The pair have won four from six, and the four have dropped just one game.

Masterton were the big movers in the three rounds played on the second day, with seven wins from the nine games across all three disciplines, to move from fourth to second.

The last three rounds will be played on Saturday. The singles and fours will be played at Eketahuna while the pairs line up at Featherston.

Carrington and Martinborough are locked at the top of table after the first day’s play in the women’s interclub sevens. The two won four games each and are 29 points, while Masterton are languishing at the bottom on nine points.

The championship will be decided over the final three rounds scheduled for Featherston on Saturday.
