Magpies, Athletic set up showdown

A potential championship decider looms for the two unbeaten teams in the local Division One championship.

Douglas Villa Magpies and Masterton TJ Plastering Athletic warmed up for the crunch match with contrasting wins on Saturday.

Magpies continued their goal-scoring rampage with a 7-1 thumping of Carterton to take their goal scoring tally to 22 in the three second round games, while conceding just one goal.

Athletic won a seven-goal thriller with Greytown Fresh Choice 4-3.

Athletic will host the Magpies at Hullena Park at 2.30pm this Saturday.

Douglas Villa Pak’nSave moved into third place with a 4-3 defeat of Wairarapa United Social.

Wairarapa United next play Greytown, and Carterton are at home to Villa.

Masterton Royals and Featherston share the lead with unbeaten records in Division Two.

Royals were impressive 7-2 winners over Greytown ITM, Featherston dispatched Douglas Villa Mitre 10 Megabeens 4-0, and Douglas Villa Skulls got their first win of the season, 2-1 over Masterton McAuleys.

In this Saturday’s games Royals take on Skulls, Featherston and Greytown meet in a southern derby, and MacAuleys play Megabeens.

Wairarapa Evergreens lead Division Three after their 3-2 win over Greytown Spartans.

Martinborough are second after a 6-3 win over Featherston United, while Masterton Lions beat winless Carterton
Reapers 2-0.

Red Star open up lead

HOCKEY

Red Star have opened up a five-point lead in Hockey Wairarapa’s men’s championship with a 4-1 defeat of Carterton Vets.

Kia Kaha leapfrogged the Vets into second after their 8-3 drubbing of Dalefield Dodgers. Red Star Old Boys stayed in semifinals contention with a 3-0 win over Featherston.

Red Star and Kia Kaha will meet in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday.

Red Star Old Boys will play Dalefield Dodgers, while Featherston will look to get their first win of the season against JNL.

In women’s Division One, Dalefield NZ Racing had a tough 1-0 win over Kia Kaha to retain their lead.

Red Star were too good for Featherston 6-2, and Gladstone Gold edged East Coast 2-1.

The top two teams, Dalefield and Red Star, will play in a crucial clash on Saturday. East Coast play Featherston and Gladdy Gold meet Kia Kaha.

Coasties Masters’ dominance of Division Three continued with a 9-1 thumping of Tumu ITM.

Gas Eketahuna beat Featherston Foxies 2-0, Eketahuna Tuis had a 5-1 win over Gladstone Black, and Wairarapa

Mitsubishi scored their first goal of the season, earning a bottle of bubbly, in a 1-6 loss to Martinborough.
