Wairarapa College First XV captain Sam Smith and former head boy Isaac Bracewell have been named in a 50-strong group to attend a Hurricanes Under-18 camp in Napier.
The camp will start on July 9 at Napier Boys’ High School.
Smith has been a star player for the school’s first XV in recent seasons, playing mainly at No 8, but also showing his versatility with several stints in the backline when needed.
Last year, he made the National Maori Under-18 team that played against the New Zealand Schools Barbarians and Tonga Under-18s.
Bracewell was head boy at Waicol in 2017 and is now plying his trade with Carterton in the Wairarapa-Bush premier rugby competition.
The talented halfback made his mark when he was at Waicol and has continued that form with strong showings on the club scene.
The majority of the players selected for the camp play in Wellington [15], while there were also strong contributions from Manawatu [14] Hawke’s Bay [11], and Poverty Bay [6].
Wairarapa-Bush had two, while Horowhenua-Kapiti and Whanganui had one apiece.
The camps are often a stepping stone to higher honours, and show players they are being watched closely by selectors at the upper levels of the game.
