Masterton’s Andrew Neiman won the feature Outlaw 71 class at the final meeting of the season at Masterton Motorplex over the weekend.

However, it wasn’t enough to claim the national title, which went to Palmerston North’s Mike Gapp on 18 points in his 1941 Willys, with Neiman runner-up on 105 points.

Victory over the weekend capped off a good season for Neiman, who also finished third in the modified class national championship in his 2014 FED “Bone Shaker”.

Neiman easily won the final on Sunday when opponent Peter Schimanski red-lighted the start. He clocked 7.711 seconds, just .011s over his dial-in time.

Craig Wilson won the $2000 first prize put up by the Masterton Motorplex for winning the Super Sedan class in his 1969 Holden Kingswood, and Warren Black in his 1972 Holden Monaro picked up the runners-up prize of $1000.

There was also an unexpected turnout of six group one cars, with Featherston’s Gavin Green thrilling the crowd with the meeting’s fastest time of 6.225 seconds and a top speed of 231.23mph.

Masterton Motorplex manager Bob Wilton said there were 147 cars, which was down on previous meetings this season.

However, he said that made for a smoother meeting, and the drivers got more runs than usual.
