The positive cases of covid-19 in Wairarapa this week have affected sporting events, although some sports events are going ahead as planned.
SOFTBALL
All Giants’ games planned for today have been postponed, and all training has been cancelled.
Club president Chris Feary confirmed that the club and Hutt Valley Softball agreed that postponing the games was the right move to make.
The Presidents’ Grade and Major B Women’s teams were to play Te Aroha in the Hutt Valley competition, and the Intercity Premier Three draw has been changed to give Giants the bye.
Feary said Giants and HVSA were uncomfortable with teams coming to Wairarapa for tomorrow, but they will reassess the situation early next week.
CRICKET
The Southey Sayer Wairarapa Korus are scheduled to play a double-header in the Central Districts women’s Shrimpton Trophy competition in Palmerston North today and Sunday.
A Palmerston North club player tested positive for covid-19 on Wednesday night but there is no contact with any members of the women’s cricket community.
Wairarapa Cricket general manager and coach Simon Roseingrave said at this stage, the team intend to travel for the matches. However, he will regularly monitor the situation.
Local cricket will still proceed with additional protocols put in place, including the compulsory use of the QR tracer app at all games, masks must be worn by all non-participants at games and players when not on the field, each team must maintain their respective bubbles, and there is no intermingling of supporters or players off the field.
OTHER SPORTS
Bowls Wairarapa executive officer Warren Fisher confirmed that the organisation is following the guidelines as set out by Bowls NZ.
This allows for gatherings of no more than 25 people, but bubbles can mingle, and bowlers can switch greens.
Bowls NZ encourages the wearing of masks.
The second round of the interclub men’s sevens, and the first round of the interclub women’s sevens are scheduled to be played tomorrow.
Wairarapa Tennis interclub co-ordinator Matt Spooner said that most interclub college teams have temporarily withdrawn from their competitions. However, regional one and regional two interclub are unaffected and their games go ahead as scheduled.
