Burger King Red Star were brushed aside by Levin Old Boys in a one-sided Coastal Challenge semifinal in Levin on Saturday.
The home side won the toss and batted first on a placid Donnelly Park pitch, scoring an imposing 298 for the loss and three wickets off their 50 overs. Red Star could only manage 195 in reply.
Levin Old Boys had batted steadily early in their innings and had taken their score to 165-4 off 33 overs, the basis for a competitive score.
However, the arrival of all-rounder Keegan McLachlan brought a rapid change in the course of the innings.
McLachlan and fellow Horowhenua-Kapiti representative Bailey Te Tomo added 95 runs in less than 12 overs.
McLachlan was particularly aggressive in scoring 84 off 57 balls, which included six sixes and five fours.
Te Tomo was a little more circumspect, with his 83 runs coming 90 balls [eight fours, one six].
Red Star captain Peter Sigvertsen was the most consistent of the bowlers, claiming 3-44 with his medium pacers. Stefan Hook captured 4-57.
Red Star made a bright start to the chase but when Jake Jonas became the first wicket to fall with the score on 39 that started a mini collapse, which had them stumble to 52-4.
With Red Star needing a minor miracle, Brock Price took up the attack dispatching the Old Boys’ bowlers all around the ground.
Price added 77 with Nathan Elliott [10] for the fifth wicket and when he became the sixth wicket to fall at 137-6, he had scored 70 off 58 balls, including six sixes and five fours.
Cole Freeman [24] and Sigvertsen [20] showed some late resistance but in the end they were outclassed by a side that included eight of the Horowhenua-Kapiti representative side.
Despite the heavy loss Red Star can be pleased with their top four finish in their second season in the competition, after finishing last in 2018-19.
