McDonalds Lansdowne are the only unbeaten team after three rounds of Wairarapa Cricket’s Umpires Cup championship.

Lansdowne easily accounted for Carterton by eight wickets in the latest round of the 40-over competition on Saturday.

Medium-pacer Nathan Kapene did the damage with the ball, claiming the first four wickets to fall, and finishing with 4-23 off his eight overs as Carterton were restricted to a below-par 104 off 30.4 overs on the Carterton artificial pitch.

Opener Jack Wakeling, with an aggressive 33 from 39 balls, including one four and three sixes, and wicketkeeper Graham Wilkes, with 13 not out, were the only two Carterton batters to reach double figures in a disappointing batting effort.

Greg Wilson made sure there would be no jitters in chasing the low score. The veteran opener demolished the Carterton bowling attack, smashing 63 runs and putting on 81 for the opening stand with Anthony Corlett [15 runs] in 7.4 overs.

Wilson peppered the boundaries in his innings of 26 balls, hitting five fours and six sixes.

Lansdowne cruised to victory in the 12th over

Defending champions Wairarapa Mitsubishi Greytown were almost as dominant in their six-wicket victory over the Rathkeale 2XI at Rathkeale College.

The students’ innings never really gained any momentum after losing their first three wickets with just 10 runs on the board. Only James Carroll, batting at number five, with 41, and number eight Conall Doyle, with 16, got into double figures, as Rathkeale were bowled out for 102 in 28.3 overs.

Medium-pacer Mike Courtman was the best Greytown’s bowlers, taking 3-30 off his eight overs.

In their reply, Greytown suffered an early hiccup, stumbling to 19-2, before coasting to an easy win in the 27th over with Courtman completing a good double, finishing 30 not out.
