The Horseshoe Club’s women’s indoor bowls team starred at the national women’s indoor bowls tournament, winning two titles and the overall trophy for best club.
The team of Marilyn O’Neale, Janice Leighton, Dale Stanton, and Elva Simonsen scored a record 56.75 points in winning the Aggregate Trophy, well clear of the Woolston Club from Christchurch in second on 37.5.
That success followed wins in the pairs and triples.
The mother-daughter combination of Simonsen and O’Neale won their second national pairs title together. The club’s second pairing of Leighton and Stanton made the last 16.
Simonsen and O’Neale were joined by Leighton in the triples and went on to win that championship.
The four went close to securing a third championship, finishing runners-up, going down 7-8 in a tight final.
Simonsen and O’Neale were also awarded their gold stars for winning five titles — the 2004 triples, 2009 triples, the 2018 pairs, and this year’s two championships.
