One of the heroes of the Martinborough’s Tui Cup victory, big lock George Bunnett, was surprised with his late-season form in scoring a hat-trick in the 36-32 final win.
“It was the first time to get three bits of meat [meat pie – try]; it’s bloody good.
“I must admit I’m a bit of a late bloomer, that’s four for the season in the last two games. A pretty special feat to do it, eh, especially in a grand final. The boys are bloody stoked.”
Bunnett is in his first season with Martinborough having moved to the town earlier this year from Central Otago.
He said the win means an awful lot.
“It’s huge. It’s not just the team, it’s Martinborough itself. Since ‘91 was the last time, it’s pretty unreal. As you can see, the whole town was here, so it’s going to be huge.”
