Plenty of play with an extra day

Carterton

The Anzac Day weather played ball, and a good number turned out for our Gross and Nett mini-tournament last week.

Those who played well were lucky, as they went home with some great meat prizes, courtesy of our sponsors.

Bill McLinden won the Gross competition with a score of 75, well clear of Greg Hilston, Carterton and Bart Guckett from Castlepoint. Both played 80 shots around our picturesque course. Mose Samau from the Wainuiomata Golf Club came in close behind with a Gross 81.

The women were to the fore in the Nett competition with Rosemary Simi from Wainuiomata leading the way with a Nett 69 on a countback from our own Sharrie Gibbons. Grant Smith and Nic Craig followed, both with Net 70.

Amazingly, there was only one two on the day, and that was shot by Grant Smith. Nearest the Pins on the Par 3’s went to Grant Smith, Nic Craig, Jennifer Armstrong and Bill McLinden. The Longest Drive went to Graham Murray.

Our course was very busy on Saturday with interclub, a large group booking, and club day for our 9-hole and 18-hole players. Thank you to the 9-hole group who let interclub and group players through.

Brooke Gibson was by far the best of the 9-holers coming in with 26 stableford points, well ahead of David Ross with 19 and Maureen Coulson with 18.

NTP on hole 12 was Terry Price and Blake Price won the Longest Putt competition, which this week was on hole 13.

Remember, you don’t have to be a 9-hole member to play with the 9-hole group. If you feel like playing just 9 holes, come along and join them.

Tee-off time for the 9-holers is 10am on a Saturday and 11am on a Wednesday.

A good turnout of 18-hole club members teed off at 12 noon on Saturday. The winners of the Elder Trophy Mixed Stableford 4BBB competition with 47 stableford points was long-time club member Grant Smith, who paired up with new club member Lorraine Stewart. They just pipped Val Edwards and Les Cherry, who came in with 46 stableford points.

Trevor Clayton was clearly “in the zone” on the day winning the mixed haggle competition with 45 stablefords. Nick MacDonald and Grant Smith came in with 39 points followed by Val Edwards and Graham Murray with 38.

Nick MacDonald won our Keenan Forestry-sponsored ball with a Gross of 76. Four players managed to get a two. Geoff Bascand, Don Kinnell, Gillies Baker and Lynn Evans.

Val Edwards had a good day, winning the Ladies All Teed Up and the Clareville Nursery-sponsored holes. For the men, Grant Smith won the Ev’s Bar-sponsored hole, and Graham Gorham won the men’s All Teed Up-sponsored comp on hole 16. Benmar-sponsored hole 10 was not struck.

Looking at all of the winners this week I would say the player of the week goes to Grant Smith.

A big thank you to our members who do volunteer work in different aspects of running the club. Club Day Starters and finishers, bar staff, committee members, course workers, Junior coaching, cart cleaners, gardeners. Without you all the club would not function.

Thank you also to Pete, Jo and Emily, our caterers who tempt us with delicious food on club days.

Martinborough

An amazing fundraising day for the new clubhouse with more than $13000 raised on Friday, April 19.

An impressive 34 teams took to the course in an ambrose tournament. The competition winners on the day with net 54.87 were Taylor Dewis, Robbie Robinson, Tom de Groen and Liam Richardson. The longest drive for the men went to Michael Bing and for the ladies, Lisa Marie Island. Malcolm Bridge had a good day on the par 3’s winning two closest to the pins, the other was won by Ju Allen who picked up the star prize of the day, a cool $500.

An enormous thank you goes to all the sponsors and donators of prizes and auction items, as well as to the members who put in their time to ensure the day was a resounding success. A shout out, in particular, to Stu Taplin for instigating the tournament and providing the meat for the outstanding BBQ and prizes.

Hot on the heels of that success, the Sunday Club hosted a fundraiser for Isaac Burt, the grandson of one of the members. He has been selected to represent St John New Zealand in an international first aid competition being held in Hong Kong. More than $1800 was raised towards his travel costs. Isaac’s family were extremely grateful to those participating and to the generous sponsors. The winners of the event were Chris Ranish for the men and Mariana McDermott for the ladies.

On the subject of the new clubhouse, the roof is going on, and the weather gods have looked very favourably on Holmes Construction, and all is on track to have the building covered before the worst of winter hits.

A big thank you to members and visitors for accepting the limited facilities available at the club at present. The recent addition of a marquee will make sure that there will be shelter for everyone during the colder months.

Recent results: 9 hole lady Jenny Joblin with 26 stableford, 18-hole lady Marilyn McKenzie with a net 71 – this included a hole-in-one on the 16th [champagne was enjoyed by all after the round], Grumpies Andy Morison on 39 points, and Thursday club – Chris Brooks with a hefty 45 points. Weekend winners were Guy Walmsley on Saturday with 40 points and Sunday’s winner was Bob Schofield with 38 points.

The next big tournament is the ever-popular Beef and Burgundy, which will be held on Friday 10th May. Get your team in quick.
