Gladstone junior Lucy Orsborn has been selected for the Tennis Central team to compete in April’s national teams’ championships.

Orsborn finished third in a series of trials at the Renouf Tennis Centre in Wellington on February 6, finishing third in the 12 and under girls, an outstanding achievement given that she has only turned 11.

Olivia Fenwick also trialled for the team and finished fifth.

On the same weekend, 50 aspiring players from Wairarapa, Wellington, Lower Hutt, Kapi Mana, Manawatu, and Hawke’s Bay contested the Wairarapa junior open tournament at Masterton’s Trust House Tennis Centre.

Gladstone’s William Orsborn retained his 12-year-old boys singles title.

Clubmate William Day stepped up from winning the 14-year-old boys singles last year by taking out the 16s singles title.

Day also combined with Andrew Cox to win that age group’s doubles title.

Other Wairarapa juniors who came away with wins were Francesca Wells [14-year-old girls’ singles], William and George Blundell [12s boys’ doubles], Billy Blundell and Billy Johnson [14s boys’ doubles], and Emily Stewart-Wells who partnered Manawatu’s Laura Silva in the 16s girls’ doubles.
