SPORTS AWARDS
There will be plenty of healthy competition for trophies at this year’s Wairarapa Times-Age Sports Awards.
The finalists for each category and voting forms can be found in every paper from today until June 1, when voting closes.
Every category will be hotly-contested, and none more so than the junior, youth, disabled and senior sports personalities of the year.
Four of Wairarapa’s brightest sporting talents are up for the junior award, with William Day [tennis], Jamie Frew [golf], Louis Oliver [swimming, rugby] and Emma McLeod [cricket] all enjoying incredible success in their chosen sports.
In the youth category, Kate Sims returns to defend the trophy she won at last year’s event, after excelling once again at cricket, swimming and athletics.
She will face stern competition from powerlifter Katia Mackenzie and athletics stars Mikael Starzynski and Gerard Hickey, who have all performed outstandingly in their respective sports.
The disabled sports personality category will have athletics stars Ben Taylor and Josh Taylor go up against swimmer Jack Lewington and cricketer Stanley Dickson.
Last year’s winner, Seth Rance, is back again after another impressive year on the cricket pitch, and he will be joined by fellow cricketer Brock Price, hockey player Dane Lett and sawing star Faavae Sefo.
The event is being held on Wednesday, June 20 at the Copthorne Hotel and Resort.
