There was just three seconds remaining on the clock when Dalefield scored their winning goal against Karori in a Wellington premier division women’s hockey match at Clareville on Saturday morning.

It was Monique Edwards who provided the important finishing touch for Dalefield as the defending champions looked certain to share the honours with the brave Karori side.

Karori went one goal up in the first quarter but Brigette Mossman equalised for the home team during the second quarter.

The last 10 minutes of play saw three more goals scored, Dalefield going to a 2-1 advantage with another Mossman effort, Karori again drawing level with four minutes of play remaining and Edwards finally knocking in the clincher with time almost up.

Dalefield coach Michael O’Connor said his team had clearly shown improvement from their first up win over Toa the previous weekend but they had still turned over too much possession through inaccurate passing.

“We often pushed passes when it would have been better just to hold on to the ball that little but longer and ensure it would find its target,” Connor said. “We weren’t patient enough and that’s clearly something we’ve got to work on.”

Mossman was the most dangerous of the Dalefield attackers in what was possibly her last appearance for them for several weeks because of Capital age group commitments and a knee operation.

The Dalefield men welcomed back Commonwealth Games silver medallist Dane Lett for their Wellington premier division match with Northern United at Clareville on Saturday and were comfortable 4-0 winners to make it two from two so far this season.
