INDOOR BOWLS
An experienced four skipped by Donald Leighton will represent Central Wairarapa at the national mixed fours zone eliminations.
The four of Leighton, Janice Leighton, John Duncan, and Bev Duckworth were one of three combinations to qualify with two wins each from round-robin play in Sunday’s Wairarapa elimination series.
All Leighton’s experience was called on in their 11-10 semifinal win over Logan Mikoz, Neville Mikoz, Dale Stanton, and Julie Mikoz.
That set up a final with Murray Larkin, Paul Miller, Colleen Larkin, and Gail Miller.
In another closely-contested game Leighton won 12-11 to progress to the zone finals in Pahiatua in July, against Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay, and Bush-Ruahine.
On Monday, the pair of Elva Simonsen and Colleen Larkin took out the Cusack 2-4-2 pairs with Lance Carpenter and Bruce Chamley winning a four-way playoff to finish runners-up.
In interclub, the Central club prevailed in the first Tararua Shield challenge, beating holders Clareville 4-1 with victories in the men’s and women’s singles, the pairs, and fours.
This weekend, the representative season will kick off with a fixture for the Tombs Trophy against Bush-Ruahine on Saturday, followed by the Burton Bates Trophy on Sunday.

Gladstone stampede
Gladstone Bulls carried on their stampeding form with their second big win of the Wairarapa men’s division one championship.
The defending champions defeated JNL 9-0, taking their tally to 25 goals for and none against in two games. Featherston got their first win of the season, beating Dalefield Dodgers 5-1, and Kia Kaha and Carterton Vets battled to a 2-2 draw. The Old Boys-Tremains Stars game is to be played tomorrow night.
Gladstone Gold maintained their perfect start in defence of their women’s division one title with a 3-1 defeat of Kia Kaha, while Tremains Stars triumphed over Featherston 3-0.
In women’s division two, East Coast beat Gladstone Black 5-1, Eketahuna Tuis beat Featherston Foxies 3-1, Wairarapa Mitsubishi were too good for Featherston Force 6-2, and Tumu ITM defeated Martinborough 2-0.
FOOTBALL
Comprehensive win
Wairarapa United Social lead Wairarapa division one after a comprehensive 6-2 victory over the previously unbeaten Masterton Athletic.
Greytown moved into a share of second with a 2-1 win over Douglas Villa Drake, and Carterton defeated Property Brokers Featherston United 2-1. United and Greytown will meet in the competition’s feature match on Saturday.
In division two, wins went to Property Brokers Greytown, 2-1 over Masterton McAuley’s, Douglas Villa Fall Protect, 5-0 against Carterton Reapers, and Douglas Villa Skulls, who had a 4-2 win over Masterton Ziggy’s Glass Presidents.
Draws were the order of the day in division three, with Evergreens and Masterton Lions fighting out a 2-2 stalemate and Greytown Spartans and Martinborough finishing 1-1.
