Two of Wairarapa’s most decorated bowlers have added to their glittering trophy cabinets with victories in the Wairarapa Champion of Champions singles over the weekend.
Ian Monaghan from Lansdowne won his 71st centre title by claiming the men’s championship, while Masterton’s Makaia Campbell continued her outstanding form with victory in the women’s championship.
Monaghan defeated Greytown’s Darren Meyrick 21-11 in the final after earlier wins over Masterton’s Mathew Day in the first round and Carrington’s Geoff Balmain 21-20 in the semifinal.
Campbell, who earlier this season won her third consecutive Wairarapa Open singles title, called on all her experience to get the better of Rozanna Muriwai from Martinborough, 21-10 in the women’s final.
That came after wins over Eketahuna [21-7] in the quarterfinal and Park [21-19] in the semifinal.
Masterton father-and-son combination Gary and Carwyn Caffell won the Champion of Champions men’s pairs with a 19-12 victory over the experienced Featherston duo of Les O’Donovan and Peter Ireland in the final.
The Caffells progressed to the final with a 24-3 defeat of Greytown in the quarterfinals and a narrow 15-14 triumph over Martinborough in the semifinal.
Featherston’s Tanya Wheeler and Janalle Frew prevailed in the women’s championship, beating the Lansdowne pair, Elva Simonsen and Dale Stanton, 19-12 in the final. Wheeler and Frew made the final with a 17-8 win over the Masterton combination of Judith Wyeth and Tina Hogg.
The winners of the singles and pairs have the option of competing at the national finals in July, with the singles to be played in Naenae, and the pairs in Dunedin.
The Wairarapa Champion of Champions fours and triples are to be played on the weekend of March 27-28, with the venue to be confirmed.
