Carterton qualified for the Wairarapa Tennis Regional One final with a clean sweep of the men’s matches in Saturday’s semifinal with Opaki White.
The two teams had met the previous weekend, and the outcome was almost a carbon copy, with Carterton winning all six men’s matches, and Opaki winning the three women’s matches.
Jono Hurley, Matt Spooner, and Cory Spooner all easily won their singles matches in straight sets. At the top of the order Hurley beat Duncan Oakley 6-1 6-0, Matt Spooner defeated Brett Dymond 6-3 6-2, and Cory Spooner had a 6-2 6-2 victory over Mike King.
Stu Wyeth gave Opaki some hope of an upset easily taking the first set off William Day before the talented teenager fought back to win the second and third sets for a 0-6 6-2 6-2 victory.
Geri Brooking, with 6-1 6-0 win over Olivia Bailey-Rotman, and Belinda Day, with a 6-3 6-3 defeat of Karen Goodall kept alive Opaki’s slim chances.
Carterton went into the doubles only needing to win one of the remaining three matches, and they comfortably achieved that with Hurley and William Day accounting for Oakley and Jon
McNab 6-1 6-1, and Matt Spooner and Andi Steinemann beating Chris Davidson and Dymond by the same score.
Brooking and Belinda Day came from a set down to beat Bailey-Rotman and Goodall 4-6 6-0 6-0, for a final score of Carterton 6 Opaki White 3.
Carterton will meet three-time defending champions Martinborough in Saturday’s Gawith Shield final to be played at the Trust House Masterton Tennis Centre.
