Carterton Black needed the doubles to wrap up victory over Carterton White in the delayed final for the Wairarapa Tennis pre-Christmas men’s interclub championship.
The decider for the Shirley Corlett Trophy had been scheduled to be played before Christmas but was put back when one of the players contracted covid-19, and was played between Christmas and New Year.
Talented German exchange student Mara Beyerle didn’t take long to show again that she has the better of most men in the region, comfortably dispatching Josh Hutchings in straight sets 6-3 6-1 to give Carterton Black the early lead.
William Day evened the scores with a 6-3 6-3 defeat of veteran Matt Spooner to send the tie to a deciding doubles. Spooner and Beyerle controlled the match from the start and lifted the trophy with a 6-3 6-3 victory.
Katie Alsop starred for Opaki Red as they defeated Martinborough 2-1 to win the Cilla Paulik Trophy for the women’s championship. Alsop won her singles and then combined with Belinda Day to win the doubles.
