Last season’s runners-up Jo Kelly and Co Carterton Maroon have again assembled a strong squad capable of challenging for championship honours.
Defenders Te Ata Hawkins and Antonia Thompson are the big losses from the side that made the 2020 final, only to fall short against perennial champions Harcourts.
Their loss has been balanced by the return of experienced defender Eve Langlands and shooter Bailee Potangaroa.
Coach Gaylene Malcolm was confident the new players would add depth to the squad.
“Our defensive duo were amazing last season, but we have gained Evie Langlands in that area, and also a solid goal shoot in Bailee Potangaroa,” she said.
“We have a few new players joining premier one who haven’t played there before or for a few years, but I have faith we are a solid team.”
The team’s aim was to be competitive, improve with each game, and peak at the right time of the season.
Carterton will play Wairarapa College in the second game of tonight’s opening round.
The third game in the first weekend of competition in the top division is scheduled to be played at 10am tomorrow.
